ISO & OT Security Compliance for Energy & Utilities in India

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) issued Cyber Security Guidelines for Power Sector in 2021, mandating annual cybersecurity audits, vulnerability assessments and incident reporting for power generation, transmission and distribution utilities. ISO 27001 forms the recommended ISMS framework.

ISO 50001 Energy Management System helps power companies and heavy industries systematically reduce energy consumption and costs — typically 5–15% in the first year. It also provides the framework for BEE Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme compliance and ESG energy reporting.

ISO 14001 is not legally mandated but is commonly required by international project finance lenders (IFC, ADB, World Bank) as a condition of environmental and social safeguards compliance. Many state tender documents for utility-scale renewable projects also specify ISO 14001 or equivalent EMS requirements.

CEA guidelines reference IEC 62443 (industrial automation and control systems security) alongside ISO 27001. Power utilities should implement an OT security program covering network segmentation, access control, patch management and incident response aligned with both frameworks.
